Parent letter

Non so se lo richiedono tutte le associazioni, ma la nostra (you abroad) nell'Application Form ha richiesto una lettera in inglese per la futura host family scritta dai genitori naturali del ragazzo.
Ora,  il nostro inglese si è fermato a livello scolastico...di venti anni fa.
L' utilità di frasi  come: "the book is on the table" e "the cat is under the table" mi sembravano fuori luogo tanto più che il gatto neanche ce l' abbiamo.
Comunque siamo partiti con le migliori intenzioni: in fondo non si aspetteranno mica la perfezione no? Se sapessimo l'inglese perfettamente glielo avremmo insegnato noi senza spendere un capitale per mandarla là.
Volevano una lettera che parlasse della nostra famiglia , di nostra figlia e delle aspettative verso questa esperienza.
Non sembra, ma è stato più difficile del previsto: sinceramente siamo una famiglia piuttosto normale, capita di trascorrere la domenica a casa, non abbiamo passioni eccezionali né particolari abilità.

Ma la difficoltà maggiore l'abbiamo incontrata nel descrivere Alessia.
Visto l'importanza di questa presentazione, da cui dipende la scelta della famiglia ospitante, volevamo fare un ritratto di Alessia positivo, ma non troppo, nel senso che non volevamo né potevamo farla passare per la perfezione.
Dovevamo quindi trovare, o meglio, scegliere dei difetti che però non fossero troppo brutti.
Mi spiego: volevamo dire che Alessia è, per dirla gentilmente, ritardataria; ma se poi passa invece il messaggio che è inaffidabile?
Stessa cosa per il disordine, il termine che abbiamo trovato su Google è  untidy  ma significa anche trasandato e non ci sembrava il caso di dare l'idea di una ragazza che non si tiene perché non corrisponde affatto alla realtà.
Perciò abbiamo dovuto dribblare tra interpretazioni e la nostra scarsa conoscenza dell'inglese ma alla fine ce l'abbiamo fatta.
Questo è il risultato che voglio condividere, mi raccomando non copiatelo!

PARENT LETTER TO THE HOST FAMILY

Our family is very united and harmonius and when there is a problem, we try hard to help each other.

We love to spend time all together having fun, watching a good film, playing, talking about what has happened during the day.

Every day we have homemade dinner together.

When my wife and I have free time, we go for long walks, we cook new recipes for our friends and spend time with them, we read a good book or we use the internet. We also like amusement parks and every year we go to one of them in Italy.

We like travelling both in Italy and abroad.

We love the USA; the national parks with amazing nature are wonderful and the people are always kind and friendly.

We love Italy because there is a good weather, great food and beautiful landscapes.

Florence, where we live, is known for its great artistic heritage and it's a fairly small and livable city.

We don't like noise and confusion, rudeness and bullying.

We taught our children to respect everyone and everything, to try hard in what they do and that studying is very important.

We are catholics, but we have great respect for all other religions and cultures.

We think Alessia has a good character.

She is always kind to others and she is honest and sincere. She is social and friendly; she is also clever and an excellent student.

But she also has some flaws: Alessia is sometimes stubborn and she wants to have her ways. She doesn't have much patience.

Her bedroom is sometimes messy and her clothes and books are everywhere!

She doesn't like sports, but she loves spending time with her friends, listening to music, watching TV series, new films or use the internet.

She loves reading books, a lot of books! She is also curios and always ready for new experiences. She's an indipendent and responsible girl. Alessia loves travelling, discovering new places, knowing new cultures and meeting new people.

We are agree with Alessia about the importance of doing this experience as an exchange student. We think that only by doing new strong experiences, young people can understand which kind of person they want to become. This is impossible if young people always stay in the tranquility of their home. We also think that in a so disunited world, hospitality is a great, great value.
